For businesses supporting hybrid or remote workforces, Microsoft Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) has long been a go-to solution for delivering secure, cloud-hosted workspaces. However, managing virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) historically required a fair amount of manual oversight to balance user experience against cloud consumption costs.

Microsoft has rolled out a series of major platform updates that fundamentally transform how organisations deploy, scale and secure their virtual environments. These new features complement each other to make cloud desktops more elastic, secure and cost-effective.

  1. Automated Host Pools

Managing a fleet of virtual machines (VMs) used to mean configuring and updating each session host individually or relying heavily on custom scripting. The arrival of Automated Host Pools introduces a centralised Session Host Configuration (SHC) object.

Think of this as a master blueprint for your virtual environment. The SHC defines everything from the operating system image, storage settings and network configuration to the specific extensions and domain permissions required. Once this blueprint is set, Azure automatically handles the deployment and lifecycle of the hosts, ensuring total configuration consistency across your entire team.

  1. Dynamic Autoscaling

Traditional scaling mechanisms for virtual desktops usually just turned idle virtual machines off. While this saved on computing power, you still had to pay for the underlying storage reservations.

Dynamic Autoscaling takes optimisation a step further. Instead of merely pausing resources, the engine uses your Session Host Configuration to create brand new VMs out of thin air when user demand rises. When demand drops – such as after Friday evening logout – the engine completely deletes the idle VMs. This shifts your environment to a truly elastic, pay-for-what-you-use financial model.

  1. Ephemeral OS Disks

To make rapid creation and deletion cycles practical, Microsoft introduced general availability for Ephemeral OS Disks within AVD.

Historically, every virtual desktop required a persistent, managed operating system disk, which incurred ongoing monthly storage fees and added a slight delay during boot-up. Ephemeral OS disks utilise the virtual machine's local SSD or NVMe storage instead.

Feature  Traditional Managed Disks  New Ephemeral OS Disks
Storage Cost  Monthly fee per disk  Completely free (uses local VM storage)
Performance  Standard cloud network storage latency  Ultra-low latency SSD/NVMe speeds
Data State  Persistent  Stateless (wiped upon host deletion)
Cleanup  Manual or scripted cleanup required  Automatic destruction with the VM

Because these hosts are completely stateless, they are perfectly optimised for shared, pooled environments where user data is already externalised via FSLogix profiles.

  1. Advanced Security and Context-Based Redirections

Security remains a top priority, especially for companies adopting Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies. The public preview of Context-Based Redirections allows IT administrators to dynamically toggle peripheral security controls based on the user's context.

For example, if an employee logs in from a corporate laptop, they might have full permission to use their local clipboard, printer and USB drives. However, if they log in from a personal home PC, AVD can automatically block clipboard sync and drive redirection to prevent accidental data leaks.

The Connected Ecosystem: The true benefit of these updates lies in how they work together. Your master configuration defines the host, Dynamic Autoscaling spins it up instantly using ultra-fast Ephemeral disks when traffic spikes, and it tears it all down automatically when the workday ends, saving your budget without sacrificing user performance.
