Microsoft has introduced the SharePoint Knowledge Agent in public preview, an AI-powered assistant designed to enhance content management and streamline workflows within Microsoft 365. This tool automatically enriches, organises, and maintains SharePoint content, making information more accessible and actionable across the platform. We explain more about the announcement in this article.

What is the SharePoint Knowledge Agent?

The Knowledge Agent is an integrated feature within SharePoint that applies advanced AI capabilities to your content. By utilising natural language processing and machine learning, it can:

  • Enrich Content: Automatically generate summaries, tag metadata, and organise files to improve searchability and relevance.
  • Maintain Structure: Identify outdated pages, broken links, and missing content, ensuring your SharePoint environment remains current and reliable.
  • Enhance Workflows: Create and manage workflows through simple, conversational prompts, reducing the need for complex coding or manual processes.

These features are designed to prepare your content for seamless integration with Microsoft 365 Copilot, enabling more intelligent and efficient collaboration.

How does it work?

Users can access the Knowledge Agent by clicking the floating agent button that appears on eligible SharePoint pages. From there, they can utilize AI-powered tools to:

  • Ask questions: Inquire about content within the SharePoint site using natural language.
  • Organise content: Tag documents, create new views, and set up rules to structure information effectively.
  • Generate summaries: Produce concise summaries of documents and pages to facilitate quick understanding.
  • Improve site quality: Identify areas for enhancement, such as outdated content or missing information.

These capabilities are tailored to meet the specific needs of different departments, from IT and HR to legal and marketing teams.

Licensing and availability

The SharePoint Knowledge Agent is available in public preview for customers with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Administrators can enable the feature at the tenant level using PowerShell, with the option to exclude individual sites if necessary.

Starting November 1, site-level opt-in will also be available, allowing organisations to roll out the feature gradually. Microsoft anticipates general availability for all commercial customers in early 2026.

Getting started

To begin using the SharePoint Knowledge Agent, ensure that your organisation has a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. Administrators can enable the feature by following the steps outlined in the official Microsoft documentation.
