Power BI has been around for quite a while now – almost 10 years if we’re counting, and since Microsoft launched the solution, the giant is making updates to the pricing for the first time. We explain more about the update in this article.

About Power BI

Since it was first in July 2015, Power BI was introduced to transform how organisations share data-driven insights and enable business users to analyse and visualise their data.

Over the years, Power BI has evolved into a unified platform enabling both self-service analytics and enterprise business intelligence (BI) for more than 350,000 organisations and more than 6.5 million developers. Today, major analyst firms globally recognize Power BI as a leader in BI platforms, applauding its innovation, ease of use, and the strength of its community.

New UK pricing

So, what does the new pricing look like for users? Starting April 1, 2025, the new prices will be:

  • Power BI Pro: £10.80 per user/month
  • Power BI Premium Per User (PPU): £18.50 per user/month

These changes will apply globally for both new customers and existing customers at their next renewal after April 1, 2025. Pricing in other currencies will be adjusted in line with these updates.

Depending on the terms of your current agreement, you may also experience the price change differently.

  • New customers: New customers purchasing Power BI Pro and PPU licenses after April 1, 2025, will be contracted with the new pricing.
  • Existing Enterprise Agreement (EA) customers of Power BI Pro and/or Power BI PPU standalone: Commercial customers with existing EA licenses will continue to have their current pricing until their next renewal. Any new agreements executed after April 1, 2025, will contract with the new pricing.
  • Microsoft 365 E5 suite and O365 suite annual subscriptions: There are no pricing changes for customers who purchase Power BI through Microsoft 365 E5 or Office 365 E5 annual term subscriptions with annual billing.

Power BI licensing overview

If you need a reminder on Power BI licensing or you’re looking into Power BI for your organisation, here is a quick overview:

Power BI Pro: Introduced in 2015, this flexible per-user license allows users to create, share, and collaborate on data visualizations and reports seamlessly. We have introduced several hundred updates since its launch, including advanced AI-powered features, enterprise grade security, connectivity to more than 100 data sources, and native integration with various productivity tools. And, we continue to add several innovations to the product monthly.

Power BI Premium Per User (PPU): Launched in April 2021, this licensing option includes all the capabilities of Power BI Pro as well as access to premium features such as access to large model sizes, and more frequent refresh rates per semantic model. Charged on a per-user basis, this license provides a flexible and cost-effective option for customers.

We also offer two additional ways to license Power BI.

Power BI embedded: Billed by capacity usage, this allows ISVs to create, deploy, and manage applications with data visualisations.

Microsoft Fabric: Fabric provides a complete platform unifying data, analytics, and AI into a single, cohesive experience. Fabric is billed by a capacity-based licensing model (F SKUs). Learn more about Fabric  here
