What is the Microsoft 365 security center?

Microsoft 365 security center got a significant update in April 2021. The idea behind the Microsoft 365 security center is to create a central place where you can manage all of your security combining capability from Microsoft Defender center and Office 365 security & compliance center.

The improved Microsoft 365 security center (https://security.microsoft.com) combines protection, detection, investigation, and response to email, collaboration, identity, and device threats, in a central portal.

The new security center enables your security and compliance teams to have centralised management across your Microsoft 365 services, bringing together Office 365, Windows 10, and Enterprise Mobility + Security (EMS), with several Azure capabilities.

What is included in the Microsoft 365 security center?

The Microsoft 365 security center is full of capability to improve your security and compliance.

Microsoft Defender for Office 365 helps organisations secure their enterprise with a set of prevention, detection, investigation and hunting features to protect email, and Office 365 resources.

Microsoft Defender for Endpoint delivers preventative protection, post-breach detection, automated investigation, and response for devices in your organisation.

Microsoft 365 Defender is part of Microsoft’s Extended Detection and Response (XDR) solution that leverages the Microsoft 365 security portfolio to automatically analyse threat data across domains and build a picture of an attack on a single dashboard.

What does the Microsoft 365 security center do?

If you have used the existing Office 365 security center or the Microsoft Defender center, then most of the capability will be familiar. The main benefit of the new Microsoft 365 security center is the fact that it brings all of this capability together in one portal.

Microsoft 365 security center helps security teams investigate and respond to attacks by bringing in signals from different workloads into a set of unified experiences for:

  • Incidents & alerts
  • Hunting
  • Action center
  • Threat analytics
